JKS Ethiopia traces its lineage back to Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern karate, who emphasized character formation over violence. This legacy, evolved by masters like Tetsuhiko Asai and currently led globally by Shihan Masao Kagawa, serves as the foundation of our organization.

In Ethiopia, this journey was spearheaded by Hailemichael Assefa (Shihan Dudikoff). After 14 years of rigorous international JKS training and technical exchanges, he founded the federation to bridge the gap between emerging Ethiopian talent and elite international standards. Officially registered in February 2020 (Yekatit 12, 2012 E.C.), JKS Ethiopia emerged as a pioneer, proudly becoming the first organization of its kind to receive official licensing from the Ethiopian Karate Federation.

One of the most remarkable aspects of JKS Ethiopia is its rapid, decentralized growth. While sports infrastructure is often heavily centralized in the capital, JKS Ethiopia has intentionally expanded its reach to ensure accessibility across the nation. Today, our footprint includes:

• Over 128 affiliate clubs operating nationwide.

• Active presence in eight regions, including Oromia, Amhara, Tigray, Afar, Harari, Dire Dawa, and Benishangul-Gumuz.

• A dedicated network of more than 120 certified instructors.

• Para-Karate & Adaptive Sports: We proudly launched the nation’s first para-karate competitions, creating dedicated, adaptive training programs and advocating for accessible equipment for athletes with disabilities.

• Women’s Leadership: By establishing Ethiopia’s first Karate Women’s Commission, we have created vital leadership pathways, mentorship, and safe training environments for female practitioners.

• Humanitarian Outreach: In collaboration with the Samaritan Vision Charity, the federation actively supports over 100 elderly citizens who lack family care.

• Youth Empowerment: We provide free training for economically disadvantaged youth and facilitate vocational training and employment opportunities through strategic partnerships with private organizations.
